Hunter Safety Field Day
Students who successfully complete all requirements will receive a temporary orange hunter safety card from the instructor. This card must be carried while hunting until the permanent card arrives by mail. Please ensure a valid mailing address is entered in your account profile so the permanent card can be delivered without delay.
Event Information
Salem ODF&W staff and local instructors will conduct
a Hunter Education Field Day at the Burns Butte Range the morning of May 16th from 08:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Students successfully completing an online
Hunter Education course or Oregon’s Home Study Workbook must attend one of
these hands-on sessions and pass Oregon’s Hunter Education test to acquire a
Hunter Education Card. Online registration is encouraged to assure
seating, hard copy evidence of online course completion or the completed Home
Study Workbook will be required, and all minors must bring a parent or guardian
to the Burns Butte Range as a signature is needed on release documents.
Students may preregister for a Burns Field Day on ODF&W’s website
(https://myodfw.com/articles/hunter-education-classes-field-days), and those
without internet access may preregister at the Hines ODF&W office (Ph 541
573 6553).
Instructions for Parents and Guardians of Minors
All minor attendees are required to have their parent or legal guardian complete, sign, and bring the required Participant Release Form to the event. This form must be submitted at check‑in before participation is permitted.
How to Register Your Child
- Click the profile dropdown at the top of your screen.
- Click "View This Page As" and select the name of the person you are registering for this event.
Note: If you do not see the “View This Page As” button, or if your child’s name does not appear in the list after clicking it, their account has not been set up yet. To create it, open the profile dropdown, select “Linked Users,” and click “Create” to add your child’s account. - From the event's detail page, click "Register" and complete the checkout process.
Minors under the age of 9 may have difficulty with the course material and may not yet have the physical strength needed to safely handle a firearm during a Field Day, particularly during muzzle control, loading, and unloading drills.
What To Bring
- (MINORS ONLY) Proof of completion from an approved Hunter Safety Course
- Dress for Oregon weather - as if you are going hunting
- Your own snacks, lunch, and bottled water
- Your printed, completed, and signed Participant Release Form
- (Optional) Personal ear and/or eye protection - ODFW will provide if needed
- Do not bring firearms or ammunition - ODFW will provide all equipment

- Students must present a printed or digital copy of their proof of course completion from an approved Hunter Safety Course at check‑in. Entry into the event will not be allowed without this documentation.
- All attendees are required to complete, sign, and bring the required Participant Release Form to the event. This form must be submitted at check‑in before participation is permitted.
