Hunter Safety Conventional Course

This is a complete, in-person Hunter Safety Education program. Students will learn firearm safety, hunting ethics, and responsibility through classroom lessons and hands-on field activities.

Students who complete all requirements will receive a temporary orange hunter safety card right away. A permanent card will be mailed within 60 days.

The course is at least 12 hours long, often spread over 2–3 weeks with classes twice per week. Some courses may include a live-fire exercise. Students must attend all sessions and show safe skills, a positive attitude, and knowledge in order to be certified.

Topics include:

  • The five main firearm actions
  • Safe loading/unloading with the correct ammunition
  • Proper muzzle control and keeping fingers off the trigger
  • Using the safety mechanism correctly
  • The four main safety rules (MTAT: Muzzle, Trigger, Action, Target)
