Hunter Safety Conventional Course

This is a full, in-person Hunter Safety Education course. Students will learn firearm safety, hunting ethics, and responsibility through classroom lessons and live fire field activities.

Students who complete all requirements will receive a temporary orange hunter safety card from the instructor to be carried in the field while hunting. A permanent card will be mailed, please enter a valid mailing address in the student account.

The course is a minimum of 12 hours, held in evenings or on weekend days, and often spread over 2–3 weeks with sessions held a few times per week. Courses include a live-fire exercise. Students must attend all sessions and show safe skills, a positive attitude, and content knowledge in order to receive certification card.

Note: Youth under the age of 9 may struggle with the course material and may not have the physical strength needed to safely handle a firearm during a live fire exercise, particularly during muzzle control, loading, and unloading drills.

Topics include:

  • The five main firearm actions
  • Safe loading/unloading with the correct ammunition
  • Proper muzzle control and keeping fingers off the trigger
  • Using the safety mechanism correctly
  • The four main safety rules (MTAT: Muzzle, Trigger, Action, Target)
