Ocean Surfperch Level 1 Workshop
Have you ever
wanted to try fishing on the beach for surfperch but weren’t sure how? ODFW
partners with expert anglers in the Oregon Surf Perch Facebook group to teach
you the basics of what you need to know to fish in the surf.
This beginner workshop is designed for new Surfperch anglers. You’ll be fishing alongside a local surfperch expert who frequently fishes the beach you'll be visiting, who will show you some of their favorite spots and offer tips on how to fish the area. This is a unique opportunity to learn from someone who knows the beach inside and out. This workshop will focus on staying safe while fishing in challenging, wet, and windy ocean conditions. You’ll also learn how to read beach structures and waves, and how to keep moving in search of a catch. Some of the beaches we visit may not have restroom facilities, so we recommend planning for alternative solutions.
We have the basic
equipment you need, but if you have your own surfperch fishing equipment you
are encouraged to bring it and we can show you how to use it. You'll learn to
rig up a surf rod so you can surf fish on your own. You will be
provided leaders, hooks, weights, and bait that you can take home after the
workshop.
Your workshop
participation includes instruction and the use of ODFW equipment.
Please be aware
when making hotel/camping/etc. reservations that we may have to cancel the
event if ocean conditions become unsafe. The event coordinator will keep
everyone who registers up-to-date. After registration closes, you will receive a detailed email with the schedule and additional instructions.
Note: Conditions during the fall, winter, and spring can be unpredictable, with sneaker waves being more common in these seasons. As a result, workshops may be canceled for safety reasons at any time. We will not be able to confirm if the workshop will take place until about a week before when we can assess the forecasted ocean conditions, so please consider this when making travel arrangements or submitting deposits. Your safety is always our top priority.
