Hunter Safety Conventional Course
This is a full, in-person Hunter Safety Education course. Students will learn firearm safety, hunting ethics, and responsibility through classroom lessons and live fire field activities.
Students who complete all requirements will receive a temporary orange hunter safety card from the instructor to be carried in the field while hunting. A permanent card will be mailed, please enter a valid mailing address in the student account.
The course is a minimum of 12 hours, held in evenings or on weekend days, and often spread over 2–3 weeks with sessions held a few times per week. Courses include a live-fire exercise. Students must attend all sessions and show safe skills, a positive attitude, and content knowledge in order to receive certification card.
Note: Youth under the age of 9 may struggle with the course material and may not have the physical strength needed to safely handle a firearm during a live fire exercise, particularly during muzzle control, loading, and unloading drills.
Topics include:
- The five main firearm actions
- Safe loading/unloading with the correct ammunition
- Proper muzzle control and keeping fingers off the trigger
- Using the safety mechanism correctly
- The four main safety rules (MTAT: Muzzle, Trigger, Action, Target)
Event Information
This class is a thorough introduction to firearm safety,
ethics, and responsibility. Online portion not required to attend this class.
Youth account needs a valid mailing address to receive Hunter Safety
certification card. A valid temporary hunter safety card will be issued at the
end of class upon completion and hard cards will be mailed within 60 days.
MUST ATTEND ALL DATES - Please meet in
the library - watch for signs - 3/10, 3/12, 3/14, 3/17, 3/19,
3/21 (6:00pm – 9:00pm) & *3/22 *Field Day (9am - 1pm) - Dress for Oregon
weather as if you are going hunting. Bring own snacks, lunch and water.
Instructions for Parents and Guardians of Minors
- Open the profile dropdown at the top of your screen.
- Click “View This Page As…”
- Select your child’s managed account.
- Register for the class.
If you don’t see “View This Page As…”, you need to create a managed account first by selecting “Managed Relationships” under your profile menu and clicking Create. For help, call ODFW at (503) 947-6101.
What To Bring
- Attendee Liability Release and Firearms Use forms (printed and completed by attendee or attendee's parent/guardian if under 18)
- Weather-appropriate clothing (as if going hunting)
- Snacks, lunch, and water
- Optional: personal ear and/or eye protection (ODFW will provide if needed)
- Do not bring firearms or ammunition — ODFW will provide all equipment
